"Apart from the great singletrack trails and the sunshine, what struck me most about mountain biking in Greece, was the quantity of the meat and the quality of the philosophical discussions that both seemed to always follow our rides.Riding mountain bikes is of course one of the most important things in life, but there is a lot more to bike culture than just bikes. Travelling with mountain bikes is the same and so a trip to Greece would be incomplete without entering into the spirit of mythology. From the outside it could seem clichéd to talk about Greece as the home of western civilisation, to weave ancient myths into tales of mountain biking and to liken four days of bike riding to the trials of Hercules. It’s not going to stop me doing it though. You can’t go anywhere in Greece without a place name reminding you of an ancient Greek story you learned about in school. Our Greek guides introduced each place that we visited with a description of what happened here in the times of legend. After a while I started to imagine virgins bathing every time I saw water and felt that every climb I went up was a Spartan rite of passage".
